Both of these recorders have their quirks, but they're probably the best
bet for money vs. price to performance ratio.
Then there is the Edirol R09HR and the Tascam DP line, but I don't know
much about those.
Probably the over all best portable on the market for under $1000 at the
moment is the Sony PCMD50. Definitely more expensive than either Zoom,
Tascam or Edirol.
Any of these units will smoke the DS50 in terms of clarity and noise floor.
If you do make any recordings from phone museums, I'd be interested to
have some samples. Keeping an EM pick-up coil at hand wouldn't be such a
bad idea either.
