I can definitely see where you are coming from with this uncompressed
recording thing.
Unfortunately I believe the olympus recorders would be your best bet for
price, uncompressed is usually more expensive for some reason.
I got myself an edirol r09hr because I was after the highest quality and I
knew it was accessible, which really was overkill but it's a great recorder,
and through sound professionals it's $325. A lot more expensive than olympus
recorders but it is an option, should you choose to take it.
I would suggest doing a google search and seeing what comes out. I have
never done it but I think it would come out to something...

My dad recently got an Olympus DS-50 which records WMA files. Are
there any reasonably-priced equivalents which record to uncompressed WAV
files? The reason I ask is, I may sometime take a trip to one or two
telephone museums where they have old electromechanical switches in
working order. I'd love to be able to record the various noises these
switches make, but don't want compression in any way distorting the audio.
What's the most reasonably-priced such recorder that's also good from an
accessibility standpoint?
