In my opinion the ds40 that I've got is amazing with the internal mono microphone, but the stereo microphone that comes with it has some issues around 4 or 5 k, so if you're going to get things in stereo i would recommend buying a separate microphone. But, on its highest quality the ds40 actually sounds really good as far as I'm concerned. I'm perfectly happy with it especially since it's smaller than the r09.
