Unfortunately, all I have in the way of EM pickups are some radio
shack-style suction cup things you put on the earpiece. I've always found
them to work their best to just cram them up to the part of the earpiece
that normally goes up against your ear. Obviously this negates the
possibility of listening to the phone normally. I don't assume you know
anywhere where I might find an older kind, do you? I've heard that some of
the best ones were loops that went around a standard phone receiver. I think
that's what Evan Doorbell used for the majority of his Phonetrips
recordings. What did you guys use to record the various talking clocks?

Both of these recorders have their quirks, but they're probably the best
bet for money vs. price to performance ratio.
Then there is the Edirol R09HR and the Tascam DP line, but I don't know
much about those.
Probably the over all best portable on the market for under $1000 at the
moment is the Sony PCMD50. Definitely more expensive than either Zoom,
Tascam or Edirol.
Any of these units will smoke the DS50 in terms of clarity and noise
floor.
If you do make any recordings from phone museums, I'd be interested to
have some samples. Keeping an EM pick-up coil at hand wouldn't be such a
bad idea either.
