When considering the importance of times, I think about two extremes in
other types of racing. At one end of the scale you have a sailing race, at
the other end an F1 practice session on a surface identical to all
competitors. Horse racing by its nature falls somewhere between these two
extremes. Horse racing in the USA differs because of the evenness of the
surfaces vs. the variety and condition changes for our tracks. The object of
a horse race is to come home first, or as Sir Jack Brabham said "I win all
my races as slowly as possible"
