Well, your computer has an operating system and other components a simple "thin client" device does not have. SB players are "thin clients" that require a connection to a server to function. And, actually, whatever program on your computer is playing the station stream is basically acting as the "server" per se.
Absent a server some of the SB players have limited abilities like play from the line-in source and/or will (should) function as an alarm clock with a basic audio alarm (no stream). As for Roku I'd guess that your Roku player connects to the online Roku server without you even knowing it. But again, I've never used a Roku player so this is just a guess.
