Unlike some other systems, LMS has a "Current Playlist" that is an ad
hoc play list to which you can add single tracks, multiple tracks,
albums, even radio stations, to at any time.

I don't have a Duet with Controller, so can't really tell you how to add
tracks using the Controller, but I'm sure you can add single tracks.
What you need to be careful of with Squeezebox is that 'Play' will wipe
out the whole Current Playlist and replace it with only the item you
selected. If you want to build a playlist, however, you can add tracks
to the end. You just need to figure out how to do that and be careful.

If you bring up the web interface to the server, it might give you a
better understanding. There's just a lot more on screen that you have
with the Controller. To access the web interface, use a browser and
point it at the IP address of your LMS server. Something like

http://192.168.0.6:9000

Replace 192.168.0.6 with the IP address of the LMS server on your
network. If you're running the browser form the server itself, you can
use:

http://127.0.0.1:9000

You may want to then go to the Settings, using the link in the bottom
right corner, then go to the tab labeled 'Interface' and to the
'Additional Playlist Buttons' setting. Tick the checkbox. What this will
do is enable a 'Play Next' button (the button looks like ">|") that
enables you to insert a song (or songs or whole album) to be played next
after the currently playing song in the playlist. Note that this is a
web-interface-only option. I'm not sure if the Controller offers a 'Play
Next' feature, but I suspect it does.

Play around in the web interface. The left side lets you browse through
your library, do searches, and immediately play things or build up the
Current Playlist. The right side is the Current Playlist itself and the
player status and buttons are at the top right. Note that you can drag
and drop tracks within the Current Playlist to change the order, plus
there are additional controls to remove items or skip to other tracks in
the list.

You can also use and create named playlists of tracks. These are the
playists that you may be more familiar with. You do this by building
them (and/or editing them) within the Current Playlist, then using the
'Save' button at the lower right to save new lists or changes to
existing ones. On the left hand side you'll note that at the top menu
level there's a Playlists button for accessing these saved playlists.
>From there you can play them, rename them, etc.
