I see both sides of the issue. We give out a $20 - 30 gift to the ROY boys and take them out to dinner and recognize them as well. Quarterly they receive a 20.00 gift. Mostly camping items. This year I will be giving out the LED head light.
Pros: It keeps the achievement in front of them. Quarterly at least! We do the point system as well weekly. It gives them motivation to go beyond their own self motivation. It works. Been doing it for 5 years. Always have 5 entries in ROY. Boys know if they work hard they will be rewarded. It also makes our record keeping to be the best it can be. When their is money in it things get a little more professional. They do it at work. It's called incentive and it does produce better results. Cons: It cost money. My two cents.
