Concerning the message from the Senior Commander: I don't know about you,
but I have limited vacation days. Also, I like to spend most weekends with
my family (wifes tend to like that - they're funny that way). That means I
have to make the best use of limited time. As Sectional Commander, I find
it necessary to attend Sectional Events and many District ones (meetings and
such). However, I believe that the outpost commander's primary
responsibility is the outpost. His limited time off and weekends alloted to
Rangers should be spent with the boys - after all, aren't they the reason
for Rangers? It's the senior commander's job to communicate
Sectional/District news to the outpost commanders. There is a chain of
command, and that involves distinct responsibilities for different
commanders.
Maybe my perspective is different than some of yours because I have seen
district and section events take up way too much time. I'm not talking
about boy oriented events (round ups, pow-wows, field days, etc.). I'm
talking about meetings. If my son's outpost commander must choose between
attending a District meeting and holding a campout, I want him to choose the
campout.
On another subject - it's the new year in the South and we're planning on
plenty of collard greens and black-eye peas. Hope ya'll have a good one.
