Fellow rangers,
What is easy is to talk to talk about all this without actually
experiencing any of it. I am all for protecting the rights of the citizens
of the United States. Do I like locker searches, NO. But then I have never
had a child killed by another student. Do I like the fact that the student
was expelled because he had a broken axe head, a pocket knife, (didn't say
how big), and of all things, a cell phone. If you and I were put in jail
for every stupid, forgetful thing we did, there would be over 6 BILLION
people in jail. I would have a life sentence +. You can do alot of damage
with the plastic knife that you get from the school cafeteria. I consider
my children safer with the pocket knife in the glove box than the one in the
school cafeteria. We won't even mention the plastic forks. Sometimes, in
my opinion, some rights need to be insured and some things have to be given
up. But then, I have never had one of my children injured in school.
As far as the death penalty, I am all for it. I have had TWO people close
to me murdered in my 42 years of life. My best friend in high school was
murdered in 1977, 20 years old, working in a Clark gasoline station here in
Michigan. The murderer was never caught. Secondly, one of my fellow ranger
commanders, the brother of one of my ranger boys, about 21 years old was
followed home from his business and shot in his house. This Lt. Commander
and his brother rode with me to and from Camporama in 1986. Yes, I have
experienced this and I am all for it. I still struggle with the fact that
if the perpetrator of the high school friend was ever caught, could I
forgive him? It was he that was instrumental with me meeting my wife of 21
years. He would have been the best man at our wedding. It gets my dander
up whenever I think about it. Men, cherish your friends and teach your boys
to do the same. You don't know when they may end.
Keith Brooks
