Hello All,
Just thought I'd throw my two cents in on a few of the week's comments.
A Pinewood Derby uphill race? Sounds cool! We try to come up with a new
twist each year to keep things interesting at the race. One thing we have
also considered is a kind of free-for-all division where the traditional
specs for building the car are eliminated or modified. This would probably
be open to the older boys & leaders only. Which leads me to...
Outposts organize & run events in lots of different ways. We choose to
make Pinewood Derby an event open to everyone. It is a fun night of racing &
fellowship that is the only RR event that many people in the church will
ever attend. This is certainly far from a "hinderance to the health &
welfare of our outpost" as another Rangernetter stated. It just happens to
work for us.
Something was also said about non-camping age boys in Rangers. Is there
such a thing? Granted, the B/SA boys only go on a couple campouts each year
w/us, but they are definitely of camping age. We do add special conditions
on their attending an overnighter, however. (Must be accompenied by a dad,
grandpa, or other adult figure, etc.) OK guys, I know this will open a whole
new onslaught of issues for some of you, but it works for us. Please also
note that there are plenty of other activities that are restricted to
certain age groups. No, Challengers are not invited to the B/SA Field Day,
etc.
Crowded calendars sometimes call for compromises. I work about 60 hrs.
a week on 2nd shift, so off-time is very limited for me. So we try to
balance our activities by having both inclusive and exclusive events. I
realize that some types of activities should only be open to certain age
groups.
Oops! looks like ya got a bit more than the two cents worth! Oh well,
reply w/my change. OK?
