Yes, what you say is true and does make sense. But I wonder if the Word 
agrees with this. The Ethiopian eunuch that Phillip baptized did not take 
time to get grounded in  the Word, neither did Phillip take time to ground 
him. Neither did the others who were baptized in the examples that God has 
given us in His Word, as far as I can see.
  I agree, myself, with everything you say. But when I hold it up to the 
Light, questions arise. Are we failing? Why, after all this time, have we 
changed the way we do things? Is God telling us to do things different 
nowadays? Or are we changing with this world? Do we really have to change 
the way we believe and act upon those beliefs to suit the world in which we 
live? What are we supposed to conform to? (Rom. 12:2) Myself, I never have 
been witness to baptism becoming routine. But I have seen some awesome 
things happen to people when they were baptized. One Sunday night, we 
baptized seven of our Rangers at church.  The Holy Spirit went ahead and 
baptized seven Himself that night, one of them my son.
  That was shouting time!
