Clint, One must rember that back in the times you mentioned everything about
Christianity was new.  AS for routine, the word might not really be the right
one maybe something along the line of a tradition.  Just think though how
much more meaningful the event would be if the person being baptized hsa had
some time to be grounded and reall understand what is happening to them.  for
me the only thing I remember about the night I was baptized was the crazy
lady who came and sat by us and kept interupting the service and some lady
shouting at her rebuking evil spirits. Any real meaning of baptizim was lost
on us.  AS a church we do need to be able to change ou ministry with the
times.  What was good 200 years ago would not really work today. AS a parent
I would want to see my child baptized so I can share the special time with
him.  And that is what it is, a ver! y special time. Some churches even have
classes for new believers to help them prepare for baptisim, that would be a
good approach.
