Getting on the soapbox...

I am not picking on anyone in particular, but the tone of discussion the
last few days largely stinks.

Most of the messages triggered by the "EFF issue" (more properly, the "false
positive issue") read to me as though the most important thing is to
determine whether EFF or the current implementation of Razor is "right."
Forgive me if I sound arrogant or paternalistic, but could we drop that kind
of language? And not worry about who triggered it? And perhaps be a bit
wiser, taking things with a grain or two of salt -- who the heck would
expect anyone from EFF, or anyone who is workign hard to stop spam, to be
timid??? Of course there are passionate people here!

I believe that the purpose of a list like this is to share various points of
view so that as a community, we make the best possible decisions, or
influence the developers to do so, not to see who wins the arguments. The
polarization lately taking place is just what discourages and alarms me
about the mass media; I'd like my on-line discussions to be a refuge from
that kind of cynicism.

Positive discussion comes from making an effort to offer and receive their
criticisms as points of view, not as facts. (And that's a fact!) Those are
skills sorely lacking in a culture immersed in cynical mass media, but I
think they're making a comeback where we can communicate free of the need to
sell eyeballs to advertisers.

Let's argue, but argue to make the best decisions, not to win the argument.

Stepping down now...
