Beth: I've seen very many cheap and useless single pivots but never a
centerpull that didn't work with Matthauser pads, decent (aero) levers and
decent cable and housing: Weinmann, Shimano, Mafac; what else? Dia Compes of
course were always good.

I recently replaced the single pivot SunTour (or was it a Shimano 600?
Anyway, it was a decent, upper-middle-class single pivot) with Matthausers
with a so-called "Dura Ace" Shimano centerpull (the DA is I'll bet good
money only a Tourney with another name stamped onto it): same pads, same
levers and cables, and it is far more powerful than the s-pivot.
(Disclaimer: I use other, better s-pivots on my two Rivs and they are almost
as powerful as the c-pull on the Motobecane, but as the Rivs have 559 rims
instead of 622 rims, perhaps the slight difference is due merely to a lesser
"law of moments" effect.)

BTW, I've never used a centerpull with brazed-on pivots; my experience has
always been with the bolt-on units.
