In my pre-Atlantis days, I did not know about road vs MTB stems & bar
diameters. To get the bars on my UJB road bike up higher, I picked up a
cheap MTB stem off the bargain table at my LBS and spronged it open to
shove my existing drop bars into it. Had to a bit of prying & futzing to
get the bolt to line up, but assumed all the fuss was because it was a
poorly made stem. Rode that set-up for thousands of miles & several years
without incident. Now that I know better, I try to do things right, but
it's interesting what you can do when you don't know you can't. :-)
