Joe,
I recommend a PS3 controller then. It is Bluetooth, with a USB
rechargeable battery. Not only that it has 10 buttons, Thumb sticks and
a D pad. More than enough for Tank combat. They're also relatively easy
to find and come in a wide variety of colours.
Cheers,

But, for the sake of academic debate, let's assume that someone solves

Did he say academic debate?
In his haste, Dr. Pittelli failed to provide constraints
for the criterion "gets a Wii controller to work with a
tank on the battlefield". One need not use the IR or
IMU features of a Wii to win this new "Pitelli Prize".
Rather one need only interface the A/B buttons to fire
a weapon or the thumbstick to drive the tank.
I foresee sharing the crisp $100 prize with some hungry
graduate student.
