Troy, google for "long tail". Alternatively, name a Java app that is
well-known. Bonus points if you can think of one of any quality
whatsoever! REAL Software doesn't need Photoshop or Word to be
written in REALbasic to thrive. My experience in the developer tools
market going back 12 years tells me that chasing the big game so you
have a glowing neon high-profile success story tends to be the
quickest way to blow your cash and wear out your people. Examples:
OpenDoc, BeOS, (Whatever)-Base, ... YMMV, but I think it's a much
stronger endorsement that lots of people can create great software
with REALbasic than that any one particular company has.

P.S. My XCode comment started this tangent. I have the same aversion
to XCode that I do to Visual Studio. The platform vendors generally
don't do as good a job as third parties developing tools. When they
do, their offerings are like crack: designed to lock you in. I just
finished reading and following Apple's smug "migrating from
CodeWarrior" guide and I'm deeply saddened that CodeWarrior is less
of an option. From the first time I used CodeWarrior, I always felt
like someone was trying to help me manage the complexities of
developing my software. XCode feels like someone didn't want to write
a compiler and wanted to make it feel like iTunes. I'm sure a lot of
Apple developers feel a sense of pride in being XCode experts, and
that's the problem.

Put it this way... try to name an application in any field, which
1) all of us on this list know, which was made in RealBasic. Maybe
this is possible. Then 2) mention that app to the most computer
software savvy person you know, who is NOT an RB-based developer...
will they recognize it too? All the apps I mentioned would meet
that test. We all know them, and so do all those people we would
choose to ask. This is really what I meant by "world class,
commercial applications." Software that is well-known for its
quality, functionality, and reliability.
