This thread is getting silly.

First of all, not everyone that writes apps in RB screams about it because there's no need to. We always joke that the accessibility of the REALbasic name has a downside in the commercial apps arena - "Yeah we program in REALbasic because as the name says, it's REALLY basic and we're a bit stupid so it suits us just fine".

At the end of the day, the end user doesn't care or need to know what development environment the app was created in. What matters is the innovation and ideas behind the app.

On this note. Name me one real world class product that is written in Delphi. Not some DB frontend financial app, not delphi itself.

Find me an app that is as good as iTunes, iPhoto6, Delicious Library that is written in delphi. Can't find any ? And Eclipse, it is extremely buggy, leaves traces of it self on the monitor (like many java apps). When you talk about eclipse, then you start to see bugs.

All the bugs (except for html viewer on mac) that I have experienced are my own fault, not RB's. I learn, and move on, and get around the issue the right way, if you hit a bug, just think, what would Aaron do, or Jon ? and the solution will come to you.

Here are some extremely cool apps written in RB (taken from www.nilobject.com) : REALbasic 2006: Sorry to pimp our own product out, but I think that the new REALbasic feels like a peer on OS X more than any other version of REALbasic. Intelli Innovations products, such as IntelliScanner Media Collector: This product actually came out before Delicious Library, and while it doesn’t have a bookshelf (which can easily be written as a custom canvas), it still looks and feels like a Mac OS X application. All of their products have sensible designs, IMHO. Studiometry: This cross platform application looks great on Mac OS X. Definitely something to check out. ProSelect: This app, while not using a standard UI, is cross- platform and an excellent example of a well designed application. Shared Space: A visual organizer. While not currently being developed, you should download it and check it out. It’s a great program that looks great as well.

And lets not forget some really good game engines that have been created with Realbasic.

I myself write an genealogy software in RB, using RealSQL database, and it is so much faster than for example Mac Family tree which is written in Cocoa. My software reads in a database with 50.000 persons in no time (< 5-6 sec's) , while Mac family tree chokes my 2x2GHz G5 for 10's of minutes (like 30+ and the machine is totally dead while doing it).

It always comes down to how good are you and how much time you spend on it. And the support you get for free with RB by joining this mailing list, and bugging people who sell you plugins is totally invaluable. RBLibrary needs more documents but what they have now is very good, and well supported.

Actually that description of "the long tail" is pretty bad. The long tail is not just a bunch of hobbyists not making any money. Nor is it a bunch of easily dismissed vertical apps. My point is that there are many MwRb products that are making good enough money or have big enough budgets to satisfy just about anyone on this list. It doesn't take a Photoshop to do that. There are thousands and thousands of products that make people good enough money that you've never heard of, but are just as indispensable to end-users as Photoshop or Word.

REALbasic does not preclude anyone who is capable of writing a "professional" app (however you want to define it) from doing so. Like all tools, it has strengths and weaknesses and rough edges, and the successful developer knows how to work with them and work the process to get his application written.

I found the "long tail" stuff interesting and there's a particularly good piece at < http://blog.talbott.ws/pages/ the_railroad_then_and_now.html> however I think this is irrelevant to RB.

RB is NOT (yet?) a tool for the average person to make software with.
