InDesign is a bit pricey at $700 retail. Also it is bent more

Does it create create the bookmarks "automatically" off a table of
contents?
As has already been answered, it automates the bookmark creation
handily. Same for indexes and hyperlinks. It also offers extremely
good control over image compression, font inclusion, etc., so you can
balance the look of the documentation vs. its size.
As for the price, it is indeed steep if you never use it for anything
else. I'm also a designer, so it's one of the tools I use regularly.
And you can find InDesign at much lower prices, especially if you
qualify for educational discounts.
