I think that's fair enough and would be at pains to say the comparison is
rather one dimensional - that is, both refused to follow the procedural
expectation (not law, not even necessarily a moral imperative) that someone
accused of a crime stand aside while the crime is investigated. On that
ground, the comparison is valid, I think.

I don't quite follow this. I think the implication is that it is the govt
that has dug up these charges, but my understanding was that they came from
within the Indigenous community. Sorry if I'm way off here. Regardless,
I'm easily convinced that the govt would not hesitate to white-ant an
effective critic like Clarke and through him ATSIC in general and
subsequently all Indigenous politcal action. I just don't see how taking
the tough but procedurally honest decision to stand down plays into the
govts hands. If anything, it beats them at their own game and shows a
willingness to maintain standards that the govt has been willing to flaunt.
