Bad guys win when everyone starts playing by the bad guys' rules. The
justification that 'it was political' doesn't wash - unless we defend the
right of John Howard or whoever to use the same excuse. It was a political
decision that stopped the Lib backbenchers crossing the floor on mandatory
sentencing and I don't think anyone was defending them on those grounds
then.
I know that, if this was about Howard, I'd be screaming for him to step down
and I suspect a lot of other people on the list would be too (though I agree
he probably wouldn't). Like I said originally, consistency says I should
expect Clarke to do the same.
