Does your provider use PAP?  If so, you'll need a /etc/ppp/pap-secrets
file.  Check /var/log/messages to see if there are any reasons for this.

Read the pppd man page PPP-HOWTO for pap secrests file info, but basicly
you just need:

your-username * the-secret

but really flip through te doc's they explian it alot better than I do.
