I think it is noteworthy that we can even have the conversation about
releasing Ortiz.  This is a benefit of being a big market team.  Can you
imagine KC signing a contract like this one and releasing the player?
They'd be in trouble for years.  The margin of error when running a team
in a big market is huge.

Yes, but they'd have to put him on waivers before he could be outrighted
to the minors. Granted, there's not much chance he'd be claimed, but if
they're going to do that they might as well just waive him outright and
give him a fresh start somewhere. I suspect being DFA'd would be kind of
humiliating and he probably wouldn't respond well to it.

 

I guess the question is, do you want to try to get him back to being
himself, or have you decided it's over and want to move on? If the
former, then you stick with him. If the latter, make a deal for a hitter
and waive him.
