I'm suspicious of these "red flags" leaks. They floated the same leaks with
Damon (remember how fragile he was?), and all he did was just finish four
mondo-productive injury-free years with the Yankees. And yes, he finished in
LF, but that may have more to do with Melky Cabrera than Damon's inability to
play center.

JD Drew had more health concerns three years ago and the Sox gave him a
five-year deal at the exact same age Bay is now at very close to the money Bay
is looking for. It makes no sense. Drew still doesn't start against lefties,
for crying out loud.

And I like the Lackey signing too, but even he missed a couple months last
season because of injury. Bay hasn't missed significant time because of
injuries in six years. And there are "red flags"? I don't buy it. It's Theo
spin helped along by an all-too-deferential set of beat writers.

This team was one bat away from being a World Series contender with Bay. Even
though they've given the staff a shot in the arm, they still remain at least
one big bat away. I hope there's more to come.

Well, I read the Sox had seen "red flags" about Bay's health and his ability to
fulfill a five year contract but who knows if that's true. They were on the
money not giving Lowell a fourth year, Damon earned his salary most of the four
years (albeit not in CF.)

So it's not that they won't pay for 36 year olds, they just don't want ot pay
for a 36-year-old Jason Bay.

And, if they used Bay money to sign Lackey, I'm happy.

This isn't a complaint about the signings but just something I can't
understand: Why was Theo willing to sign Mike Cameron for two years, when he'll
be 37 and 38, but won't offer a fifth year to Jason Bay, who would turn 36 at
the end of the fifth year? I know Bay costs a lot more, but he's also
significantly more productive.
