Melky Cabrera doesn't beat out anybody -- Damon lost the ability to play CF.
The point of not offering a five-year contract is many guys show a decline when they're 34, 35. If Bay showed that he could play the next three years without a significant decline, then I bet the Sox wouldn't have a problem offering two more years after that, but there's a lot of uncertainty there. Cameron showed he could play pretty well at age 36, so it's not much of a gamble to bet that he won't completely fall apart at 37. And if he does, there's a lot less damage. It's also entirely possible that the Sox expect Ryan Westmoreland and/or Josh Reddick to be ready for a full-time job in two years time and don't want to fill the 2012 job quite yet. And I know you don't like J.D. Drew, but what do you mean he doesn't start against lefties? The man hit .272-.381-.482 against lefties last year, in 135 plate appearances -- virtually the same OPS that lefty killer Mike Lowell had against lefties. He was one of the most productive RF in baseball. Give the man a break.
