Well, I read the Sox had seen "red flags" about Bay's health and his ability to fulfill a five year contract but who knows if that's true. They were on the money not giving Lowell a fourth year, Damon earned his salary most of the four years (albeit not in CF.)
So it's not that they won't pay for 36 year olds, they just don't want ot pay for a 36-year-old Jason Bay. And, if they used Bay money to sign Lackey, I'm happy.
