Well, Pete Abraham is not someone I'd label 'PC' generally..... But while I
agree that calls do tend to even out, they don't if you
take the situation into consideration, as I noted earlier. The NUMBER of
good/bad calls would probably even out over 162 games,
but not the IMPACT.

Isn't the Questec system supposed to address this whole thing? Is it deployed
at every park now, for every game, or still just
selected parks/random games?

Good points Ray. But, as you just saw,
the guy who wrote that article with data went way out of his way to make
excuses for the umps and extrapolate that it must even out over time. That guy
is no reporter.

I'd love to dump the umps
for balls and strikes, let the ump respond to a tone in his ear and he can
still make the call.

Barring that, I'd like to see MLB set a standard for accuracy among Umps.
If you want to be in the Show you need 98% accuracy on your calls, or some
number
like that.

I think that sports writers could actually do something useful here with the
internet. They could post stats for all the umps as the season goes on.
This would also create pressure to improve accuracy.

I might be ready to dump the umps for balls and strikes, but probably
not for other stuff. I'm okay with reviews for stuff if it is in the
play-offs, but I'm not okay for reviews in every game unless they do something
to speed up the game. Maybe instead of calling balls and strikes, the
Home Plate ump can time the pitcher like a shot clock. LOL Okay,
just kidding.

Real feeling is that the umps are out to get the Sox.

Interesting data on balls and strikes. This is what I mean when I said
that technology makes these guys look really bad. The article
accompanying the data says the following:

"In the end, the umpires are people and they make mistakes or have bad
days. Over the course of the season there are probably a handful of games when
the Sox get the sharp end of the stick and a handful of games when they benefit
from bad calls. Over 162, it evens out."

No! I don't buy this "it evens out" argument. Has anybody
ever measured this? And some calls have much higher consequence than
others. In my opinion, these inaccuracies detract from the game rather
than making it more "colorful". We have the technology to get
the calls right. Let's use it. Dump the umps!

You'll have them as soon as there's a computer that can show, objectively,
whether the foul happened. But there isn't so basketball must suffer.

It's going to be interesting to see umps respond to pitch-by-pitch analysis of
how much they suck.
