I wasn't thrilled about the hiring initially, but neither was I terribly excited about any of the other candidates that were finalists. Dave Sveum? Gene Lamont? But I suspect I felt the same about Tito in 2003.
I did change my opinion once Bobby V got going. Seems like he said and did all of the right things and brought a lot of energy and enthusiasm to the job. It seems from the outside looking in, that maybe some of that has been lost since the season started, for some reason. I guess maybe losing would do that, but he just seems beat up at this point. But we are stuck with him at this point, probably for next year as well, since it would require Larry L admitting he was wrong to get rid of him, and I think we all know that Cherington doesn't have the juice to do anything about it. But like everything else, the manager doesn't pitch, catch or hit, so ultimately, it's on the players. If they need a manager to motivate them to play, then we have a larger issue. That's a really good point. I think the Sox are letting the tail wag the dog. The NFL specifically told Robert Kraft not to hire Bill Belichick becaues Belichick was lousy in front of the media. They even sent him videos of Belichick press conferences saying "Do you want this guy representing your team?" But Kraft knows what' s important. You win and then it doesn't matter what you say to the press. "After you win 20 in the show, you can let the fungus grow all over your shower shoes and the press will say you're colorful." Same with Belichick. There is no amount of media savvy (if that's what Valentine has) that will save him from a losing season. Dissing his playiers in public is not going to help either.
