He just didn't play here.

Can somebody pass the mashed potatotes?

Yeah, I never subscribed to the notion that he can't play here.

Well, with Crawford, I assume you mean the 'real' Carl Crawford, not the

Angst? I see it as commentary.

I'm not going to predict an outcome until the Sox are finished with their off
season moves. It'd be silly to say how they're going to finish. Ellsbury could
still be dealt. The Sox might use this flexibility to secure some cheap young
talent, at least that's the plan.

My opinions on the deal thus far have been pretty clear.

Happy with the Papi deal.

Okay with Napoli (if it the deal closes, which it should.)

Not really sure what to make about Vittorino. I hear conflicting reports as to
his health and diminishing skills. Put a gun to my head and I think the Sox
overpaid by a bit, but keeping an open mind.

Dempster - I don't want to sound like a negative nanny but I think this will be
a disaster. National league pitchers haven't fared well here - I'm thinking
Smoltz at the end of his career, (and drawing a blank on the pitcher that same
year that bombed her but excelled in St. Louis), Joel Pineiro, etc. I don't
like they're paying $13 million for a warm body, but people seemed satisfied
with the deal because we've become so obsessed with length of deals.

But if we're to look at the Sox....

Catcher - Offense might be a bit better with Davis Salty
First Base - I think Napoli is a downgrade from Gonzalez.
SEcond base - same
3B - I hope Middlebrooks delivers. Not willing to say he's going to perform
better than Youk.
SS - Who knows.
LF - Crawford was a talent and certainly better than Jonny Gomes.
CF - Ellsbury should have a better year.
RF - Vittorino vs. Ross - I'll give V the upgrade.

Rotation - Might be better with Lackey and Dempster than with Beckett and
Dempster. WOuld like to see another deal. Also hope Doubront doesn't suffer
from a sophomore slump.

Bullpen - Apparently, the Sox offered Bailey to Toronto for Farrell and we
declined. Safe to say I'm concerned about the closer positon. Happy with the
middle reliever they signed. Hope Aceves can pull his head out of his ass.

At this point, I'd say this team is slightly inferior to last team. Toronto
should be better. I still like the Rays even without Shields though they're
pitching is young. Not really sure what to make about the Yanks or the O's, but
the former seems to pull things together.

That's the landscape as I see it.

Bottom line, the fan focus on length of deal is humorous. The Sox have the
money and should use it to pay for actual talent rather than hoping to win with
scratch ticket talent.

My prediction is that they'll finish the season with a higher winning

He meets present Sox criteria:

1. Warm body.
2. Short-term deal.
3. No draft-pick compensation.

I'm not sold on the plan, but we can't say they don't have one.

One major league source suggested that the Sox should -- and likely do -- have
"modest expectations" for the veteran, describing him as the best option
available on a relatively short-term deal that permits the team to minimize
risk, rather than a true impact starter who can transform a rotation.

"He'll carve up weaker lineups and will be a positive clubhouse guy," said the
source. "[But it's] hard to expect much against the deeper lineups and I don't
think [the Sox] do."

Sounds about right. I guess $13m doesn't get you what it once did.

I guess he's making $2m less than Beckett

                       ERA WHIP SO/9
Becket 4.65 1.327 7
Demps 3.85 1.319 8.7

two years at $26.5 million ($13m per again)

Josh Hamilton goes to Angels for 5 years/$125m.
