Just some food for thougt from a newbie in SW, but with some
 experience from FW.

I do agree about the benefits of adding a refugia with macros, but I think
that after 4 months the bacteria population should easily be able to reduce
the ammonia down to nitrate real quick. If something has been decaying so
fast that is has given you 0.25 of ammonia it should be gone by now?

If I remember correctly there are to different groups of bacteria that
converts
from ammonia to nitrite and then from nitrite to nitrate. Is it possible
that
there could be something in the tank that kills most of the first group but
doesn't affect the second that much? Copper? Don't remember if you have
tested for this.

I know that you had the ammonia tested with serveral test kits, but what
about the nitrite test? Maybe this is the one that's giving you a false
reading,
if you actually have nitrite in the water I would test for copper.

Do you have any macros in the tank now? Copper in a small concentration
(usually from medication) reduces the growth of plants in a FW-tank and if
it get just a bit too high it kills them. I guess that the same thing would
happen to macros in SW.

all right it's been quite sometime since I moved my aquarium and still
the ammonia is fluctuating between .25 and zero. In fact I have only
seen a reading of 0 twice. After not feeding for 3 days. What do I do
now. I have a 75 gal aquarium w/ 75lbs of live rock. It has a sump
with a berlin skimmer and a heater and a return pump. I have two
oscillating pumps in the main tank as well as the return. I have taken
out all of the crushed coral per Ron and Shane. What do I do now. I
have a sailfin tang, a mandarine goby, 2 scarlet shrimp, 2 fire shrimp,
and 1 banded starfish. I feed once a day about 1/3 to 1/2 of a block of
formula 1 or 2. What can I do to reduce the ammonia or build up the
denitrifying bacteria. The temp is 78, ph is 8.2, ammonia is .25,
nitrite is 0, nitrate is about 20, calcium is about 350-375, and dkh is
9.8. Any help would be appreciated. Should I get more live rock maybe
I don't have enough. The live rock is fiji and there is not a lot of
sponges on it. I have recently started getting some algae so I have
changed my bulb in the normal output fixture. I changed it because the
tank has been up and running for about 1 year now. I did move it after
about 6 months to my new house. Even if the rock dried out over four or
five hours would it not be back to normal after four months. I don't
have a clue what to do anymore.
