hmm.  about 8 mths ago i was having real trouble maintaining my alk, tho 
calcium levels were fine.  i was running phosgaurd at that time.  without 
making any connection to what you said i removed the phosguard, changed some 
water and shortly thereafter the alk started coming back up.  assuming what 
you said is true then the imbalance was due to the phosgaurd.  i had assumed 
some sort of ionic imbalance with mg or str.
