Your webmasters - all of us - have been overhauling the web
site in the background over the last month or so. This is why
some donated material has been late being posted, and a few
pieces haven't been posted (yet). The underlying structure of
the web site was getting hard to manage.
The average user does not realize how big the repeater-builder web
site is, and how it's grown in the last couple of years. It started out
as a reference site - a few hundred k of pages and images in a few
directories - oriented towards GE and Motorola and now, well, here
are some excerpts from the last statistics run:
type total
html 2,720 KB
gif 7,889 KB
jpeg 48,320 KB
pdf 105,421 KB
powerpoint 6,384 KB
audio 5,710 KB
Total 231,030 KB in over 50 directories
Anyway, what am I leading up to?
Over the last couple of years your volunteer staff has been adding
a lot of donated material and re-organizing the web site to make it
easier to maintain and to grow even more (which depends on YOU
and your donated material - hint - hint - nudge - nudge).
You probably have noticed new items showing up on the menus
(like the ArCom and Kendecomm links in the last few weeks).
And other web pages are getting more detail - like the photos
added to the Moto channel element and GE icom pages.
The web site re-organization has been accomplished by copying
files into new subject-oriented directories and adjusting the
pointers. The old files remained "just in case".
The Bottom Line:
We did a major housecleaning last night, working from a list
of "orphan files" that the statistics program developed.
We moved almost 200 "just in case" files to three "holding tanks".
All readers - please - if ANYBODY gets a missing web page or
a missing image, or a missing download file, PLEASE LET
US KNOW by dropping a note to Mike WA6ILQ at
(callsign) at arrl dot net. We can restore the "just in case"
file, or better yet, fix the pointer buried in the web page.
We trust the program that produced the orphans list, but
human error may have missed a few or picked up one or two
that weren't supposed to be moved yet.
We aren't too worried about off-site links, just the on-site
ones right now.
The overall web site re-org will be in multiple phases, this is
just phase one.
