I talked with @mateiz offline. Our consensus was that we'd just bite the
bullet here and break binary compatibility for this one function call. We are
pretty religious about compatibility, but in this case I don't really see any
good alternatives. IMO if this is the only thing we have to break as a result
of upgrading to 2.11 it's pretty palatable. So I'm inclined to merge into
branch-1.1 if this passes tests.
