As to who owned what that also was a matter of interpretation. BUT when the war started along with the propaganda by both sides what was certain and witnessed was the dislocation of Arabs from their homes and the rebuilding on those sites and villages by the Jews who TOOK them. That injustice has never been properly adjudicated except it has been condemned by the international community. And it will be reconciled in any future agreement or there won't be one and that is what they have been saying all along.
