You're right, Donnella. They shifted to New Zealand between c. 800 CE and 1100 CE, from the Marquesas Islands, now part of French Polynesia. Some of them stopped off at the Cook Islands on the way - BTW I have relatives from Rakahanga, one of the Cook Islands. So the New Zealand Maori language and the Cook Islands Maori language are very similar. But their cultures have diverged, principally because of the material culture differences - NZ Maori had access to a hard stone, jade aka greenstone, Maori: "pounamu", and everything was bigger and there was more of them; Cook Islands stayed pretty much like the other Polynesian Triangle cultures (Hawai'i, French Polynesia, Rapanui (Easter Island)). (Samoa and Tonga are earlier branches of the language and culture. Tonga's a constitutional monarchy where the freedom of the press has recently become an issue; Samoa's a republic which has just recently decided on one man one vote to replace the electoral college of matai, or paterfamilias.) Tattoos were a tribal status thing - a Maori elder once told me when I visited his tribe - Ngati Ranginui - 's marae (meeting house plus courtyard plus kitchens, etc) that they served to identify warriors in the heat of battle and of course after, when in quiet reflection you can determine whether or not you killed the enemy's rangatira (Big Man, chief), or not. New Zealand's got a bit of colonial history it's probably worth studying, as one way to get a perspective on the horrors of the Middle East. (And you _need_ perspective, otherwise you'll not see the wood from the trees.) And indeed the rest of the colonial experience is a gold mine for ideas on how to get through the current tragedy in Israel and Palestine. Ie, what happened, how it happened, what and how to stop it, how to heal the wounds.
