MP3s are interesting... with some utilities (don't know about the one you're using), instead of writing adjustment values to metadata tags (as you would for FLAC, Vorbis and others), certain values in the audio data are tweaked to adjust the gain. (This can be done in an essentially lossless way.) Under that scheme, only one of album- and track-gain can be in effect at one time.
