Yes, mp3gain seems a little quirky and doesn't operate as I first thought....
Further investigation shows that I think I have figured out what mp3gain is doing (at least the command line version anyway). Application of track gain using the following: mp3gain /k /r /s r <file.mp3> adjusts each track individually by the nearest multiple of 1.5dB steps needed to reach 89dB then puts the remainder in the track gain tag. No album tags are created. Application of album gain using the following: mp3gain /k /a /s r <file.mp3> adjusts each track by the same multiple of 1.5dB steps and puts the remainder (also the same for each track) in the album gain tag. At the same time, track gain tags are produced and the full adjustment needed is put in the track gain tag. However, application of BOTH the above one after the other leaves the tags in a bit of a mess. Track ones seem to be maintained but the album ones go....strange. As the software actually adjusts the data itself but only stores one UNDO tag one is b*ggered if you apply track and album separately. Anyway, I have decided to use the GUI version which allows you to set the track and album gain but not change the data. If anyone knows how to get the command line version to do this then please tell me. Otherwise I can't fully automate my ripping using mareo.
