I understand your need to checksum tags. It's a rational approach, mine
is personal: I change my tags often and on a 80.000Ko flac file, there's
usually only less then 10Ko of information. 
If sound data is lost and I don't have the original disc on hand, I
can't do anything the forget the track. If only the track of a file is
lost, I'm still able to fix it. 

With SMART + sound data checksumming + weekly backup, I feel
comfortable.

Furthermore, I know a disk can die without any warnings, but often
(mostly?), disks dying "all of a sudden" have or could have sent SMART
notices that were not seen. But SMART can't help you with lightning
damages (Oh my god, my backup disk isn't electrically unplugged when
unused!!! :) )
