I agree that the Artist/Album/Track hierarchy just doesn't cut it for classical music. After filing and finding LPs and LPs since the late 60s, I knew that I wanted to file music on my computer using both the Composer and the Performer (Artist). My normal selection sequence for classical music is
Genre->Composer->Work->Artist (and if necessary, reissue version). So what should I do? Should I settle for finding some kludge to fit tags into the Artist/Album/Track mold or should I find a way to do things my way? I looked until I found ripping/tag editing and playback tools that fit me. That narrowed my choice a lot but it wasn't hopeless. I did have to specify tag values yourself. With a reasonable compromise, I've got a decent solution on the iPod too. It feels great to do things my way! I recommend that anyone who wants to store a sizable collection of classical music on a PC hold out for a good solution rather than a kludge.
