In the big picture your desperately right... but I think things could
be enhanced in a small way that could be enough to please a lot of
people without breaking everything...

Either by adding a few more optionnal (and browsable) fields:
- composition date
- work name
- opus/catalog number
- performer
- orchestra
- recording year
- [add your field there]

The "genre" tag can now be used to handle a lot of information like
period, instruments, etc...

---
Ideally, I would say two generic multivalued and sortable fields could
create a scheme everyone can modify for himself:

credit => Name, Role, FreeInformation
tag (web 2.0 meaning) => Tagname, Tagtype, Freeinformation

With these two "intelligent fields", you can create the credit system
you like, be it simple performer style or more evolved orchestra,
instrumentist, singer, sound engineer, choir, etc. for the "role" tag;
or Period, Instrument, Media Source, Quality, Genre, Mood, etc. for the
"tag" tag.

I don't think we must stay on the status quo that artist/album/track is
a situation that won't evolved in the future. You could look at how
itunes tag scheme evolved since a few month/year (I'm using itunes
since I bought an ipod touch in the beginning of the year so I don't
really know its history).

The wiki pages with personal tagging schemes could be a gould idea to
talk about pros and cons of each solutions and a good place for
beginner to look at.
