so, i've got a brand new (pretty awesome) duet, nas, and wireless router. hooked up and configured, mostly working fine (with a few exceptions noted below). now comes the fun part -- ripping ~1000 cds. i (naively) started without giving the process a lot of thought; seemed like i'd figure out the issues as i went along. of course, issues have appeared, and now i'm wanting to study the particulars more carefully before continuing. have come up with a bunch of questions, and hoping some of you battle-scarred pros can lend some wisdom and experience. (note: i've scoured the boards for info, so part of this exercise is just confirming or refuting some of the answers i've uncovered to date).
here's the laundry list: 1. data corruption ripping directly to a nas. it appears that there may be an issue, but i haven't been able to locate any specifics. should i be concerned? as an aside, i've already had problems that could be some sort of corruption -- some of my ripped tracks decode as white noise or with severe distortion. curiously, this occurs when i stream through the duet, but not when i stream directly to my laptop. is this a familiar problem to anyone? 2. rip integrity. i've come to understand that all ripping solutions aren't created equal. i'm trying very hard to maintain data integrity, so would very much like to identify a bulletproof process. i started using itunes for ripping (on a mac), but have the feeling that this is not the best option. is this correct? if so, what's a good alternative? i've heard about max; is this the way to go? (again, for a mac-based system only.) 3. format. i'm not interested in lossy formats, and am feeling most comfortable simply ripping to aiff (apparently better than wav for metadata). most folks here seem to go with flac; is there a compelling argument for flac over aiff? personally, i'd much rather pay the storage overhead for exact file copies. 4. itunes in general. besides actually ripping, what are the pros and cons with itunes? seems like a good vehicle for tagging, but are there other issues i should be aware of? 5. artwork. it would be nice to have a better understanding of the pros and cons of embedding artwork vs. separate files. i've noted the problems with accessing artwork in external folders. have had the most success dropping an appropriately named jpg into the album folder. how would i embed artwork into the audio files? 6. squeezecenter problem. a different sort of issue than the others here, but might as well throw in everything! am getting a "player not found" error, with the following instructions: "Make sure that your player is plugged in and its networking settings are correct. Click the Refresh button once your player is connected." well, the player *is* plugged in and working fine on it's own. what refresh button is being referred to? 7. general. is there a good, detailed resource (web site, sticky forum thread, or whatever) that addresses this stuff? i know i'll have many more questions... thanks in advance to anyone who can shed some light. -andy -- ASE ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ASE's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16944 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=46475 _______________________________________________ ripping mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/ripping
