To give you some very quick answers: 1. I wouldn't be.
2. For a Mac I'm not so sure, EAC is the gold standard on PC and CDParanoia on Linux. There may be suggestions on the wiki. 3. The argument for FLAC is that it's lossless, is understood by pretty much everything (except iTunes) and free/open/untaintable. It's also extremely well supported by SB players. The other lossless choices you have are basically WMA lossless, ALAC, AIFF and WAV (there are others like APE but let's not complicate things!). You're on a mac so WMA is out. WAV doesn't do tagging, so IMHO it's pretty useless for archiving. I don't know much about AIFF tagging but let's assume it works well. We now have AIFF, FLAC and ALAC. The big downside of AIFF is it's size, it will be roughly double the size on disc and, probably more importantly, will take twice the network bandwidth. That means you're more likely to suffer dropouts, particularly if you have a wireless link. Given that there are no benefits to AIFF, I don't know why you'd choose it over a compressed format - so go with ALAC or FLAC. Of those, FLAC is a lot more SB friendly, but ALAC is a lot more mac friendly :) 4. Not considered to be the best ripper, tends to be a little fast and loose with things like adhering to tag standards. Doesn't support many formats. Alas I don't think there are many alternatives on the mac. 5. I'll pass on this one, I just throw a .jpg in every folder and it works fine. iTunes doesn't do it that way though... 6.
