One reason to go with 24bit wordleghth is that these cracks pops and
subsonic bumps can be of much higher peak level than actual music,
after processing one migth re sample to 16bit.

The crackle are often very fast so one won't perceive its peak level as
that.
this was an old problem with inferior phone stages that overloaded as
an side effect, which trasnlats into that snap crackle is more audiable
with some preamps ?

One migth keep an eye on the recording level and capture with 24 bits.

what a ramble, in short headroom is good when manipulating the data
compress after the work is done.
