I usually add track and album replaygain tags as I rip each album using
Foobar "treat songs as a single album" action.

However, I had loads of older albums ripped before I started to do
this, and probably a load where I'd simply forgotton to do it.

So I loaded all of my music into Foobar, which displayed the music
grouped by %album%. I then performed an action to add replaygain tags
grouping albums based on tags.

I realise now that this by default doesn't do what I would have
expected it to do. It doesn't use the display grouping, it uses it's
own advanced setting to describe what it should consider to be grouped
as an album. This was something like "%album artist% | %date% |
%album%".

So, this is a bit of a warning for others that apply replaygain tags
using Foobar, based on tags. It's fine for normal albums (all songs by
the same artist or with album artist tags, having the same year tag).

For albums that have songs with different dates, they will be treated
as several mini-albums (applies album replay gain info for each group
of songs in the same year).

I've now realised that I'm going to have to re-apply replaygain to
loads of albums, and wondering what the best way to do it will be.

I will probably develop a SQL query to find all songs on albums that
don't have consistent album replaygain values. This could be turned
into a playlist, which I could then load into Foobar to re-apply the
replaygain tags again, done properly, to that sub-set of my library.

It's not particularly easy to work out how to automate this to work in
all cases.

I will configure Foobar to apply replaygain album tags grouped by
"%album artist% | %album%" (i.e. remove %date%).

However:
1. I don't want to apply album replaygain info for songs that are not
on albums (i.e. don't have an album tag). Foobar will treat all
non-album tags as one album.

2. My compilation albums don't have album artist tags, so "%album
artist% | %album%" would instead group by the each unique artist on the
album. I'll either have to add album artist tags (naff) and then also
add compilation=1 tags, or manually apply replaygain tags on each of
those compilation albums (applying with "treat as single album" mode).
