Seconded. Getting the LP as clean as possible before it's played may
well be the most important step. I use a Moth RCM mkII. As well as that
and the VPI mentioned above, the other common vacuum cleaning device is
the Nitty-Gritty. They all work on similar principles: wet-clean the
surface using some sort of scrubbing technique with a brush and then
suck off the solvent along with suspended dirt. The best of the vacuum
machines is probably the Keith Monks, but it costs thousands (whereas
the Nitty-Gritty, VPI and Moth machines cost hundreds).

Having said all this, if someone has a relatively small number of LPs
to transfer, investing in a vacuum machine is not very cost-effective.
Some people claim to have had good results from simple wet-cleaning by
hand, provided it is followed by very thorough rinsing with pure
distilled water. I've never tried it myself, but provided the rinsing
agent really is completely free of contaminents, then it seems to me
that it should work.

I don't quite understand this. If you get best listening results from
your audiophile belt-drive turntable, why not use it for your
transfers? Is it that you wanted a separate dedicated turntable for
making transfers, and couldn't afford a second high-end TT? Given that
you are using a USB audio interface, why not simply use a laptop and
take the recording machine to the main stereo system?
