I'm using web interface, but I think the behavior is the same in the
other interfaces since I get duplicate entries in the "albums" table
when it doesn't work.
I'm looking inside the Albums menu and I have the "List compilation
albums under each artist" set (but I don't think it makes any
difference).
The structure is like this:

1. If I set "ARTIST=First Artist" on all tracks, everything works.
2. If I set "ARTIST=Second Artist" on Song3.mp3 and Song4.mp3 and
"ARTIST=First Artist" on the rest, everything works.
3. If I set "ARTIST=Second Artist" on Song3.mp3 and "ARTIST=First
Artist" on the rest, I get duplicate albums.
4. If I set "ARTIST=Second Artist" on Song3.mp3 and Song6.mp3 and
"ARTIST=First Artist" on the rest, I get duplicate albums.
5. If I set "ALBUMARTIST=Third Artist" on all tracks everything works
correctly.
The ONLY thing I changed between the above tests was the ARTIST tags
(and ALBUMARTIST in the last test)
I don't think the COMPILATION tag matters, I get the same behavior
independent if it is set or not. I think the logic still uses the value
of the ARTIST tag in this case.
The ALBUM ARTIST tag matters because if it is set it's value is used in
the logic instead of ARTIST.
If all tracks are in a flat structure in single directory, no Disc 1
and Disc 2 directories, everything works all the time.
