Question: How to you use Genres with your music files?

- Don't use genres, can do without
- Just a handfull as general guidance / entrance (-6)
- Some genres to make some distinction (7-15)
- Really fine grained (15+)
- I went all-in and copied Amazon's / HMV's / ... system (200+)
- Please, stop with these stupid polls!

I have gone with a combination of a less is more + sub-genre type
setup...

My Genre Tag is simple with about 15 to 20 values that tend to be as
much classification as genre.

Things will often get "classified" as Rock, Folk, Jazz, Country as
well as Live, Soundtrack. This gives me a broad brush that in
combination with custom-browse plugins and dynamic playlists can easily
include or exclude a nice variety as needed. This setup I've had for
many years now thanks to MediaMonkey and its nice db and plugins.

In the past few years my love of Jazz has grown along with its variety
of styles. I've also had the occasional annoyance of having the
occasional heavy metal track pop up or some other style. As a result,
I've created a "style" tag that is multi-valued and lets me refine my
genres and styles without creating too many genre fields specifically.
i.e. a Miles Davis track can have a genre of "Jazz" and a style of
"Hard-Bop".

While that definitely increased the workload with my 1800 albums and
20k tracks, I am an album oriented listener, so as an initial run
through all tracks on specific albums have the same genre and style.
That was relatively easy to complete, and now I refine things on a
track by track basis as I see fit.

In terms of my Rock and Pop music, I haven't gone as far as classifying
by ballad, etc.

All of this works well with the Custom-Scan, Custom-Browse, and Dynamic
Playlists plugins.
