I treated a new computer as a clean start and ditched iTunes for Media Monkey Gold. I have created a second library of MP3s for mobile use. I have resisted making copies of everything -- just stuff my wife and I are most likely to listen to, so it hasn't been that much of a pain. I like the way you can view both libraries or one or another in Media Monkey.
On 24 bits and iPods, my 3rd generation (I think) 32 gigger supports up to 24/48. Not the smoothest playback, though.
