The whole thing is kind of a painful mess, isn't it.

If there are only a few composers on the disc, I'll put them all in
ALBUM, e.g.  "Schumann & Brahms: Piano Concertos" or "Schumann: PC;
Brahms: PC1". If it's a compilation with various composers, I'll list
it by artist, e.g. "Toscanini conducts French Music" or by theme,
"Baroque Bohemia vol. 1".

I don't like to split up sensible programs by using a separate album
for each work. I use a WORK tag for the work, and then
customscan/browse to create my own menus.

For Artist, I've tried to put in just soloists, and then use the
CONDUCTOR and BAND tags. But my thinking now is that ARTIST should
just have a short list of identifying artists that will fit in the
display, usually just soloist and conductor, or the star singers and
conductor, or conductor and orchestra (separated by semicolons). And
I've grown somewhat tired of filling out the CONDUCTOR and BAND tags
when they are often redundant.

For my custom browse menus I add a tag RECORDING for a short
description of the recording (to distinguish it from other recordings
by the same artist). So my menus are organized by

Code:
--------------------

  COMPOSER
  WORK
  RECORDING

--------------------

An example might be

Code:
--------------------

  Beethoven
  Symphony No. 9
  Furtwängler/Lucerne

--------------------

Oh, about COMPOSER, I don't bother with first names if it's obvious who
is meant. I know "Bach" is J.S., and the kids get their initials, e.g.
"Bach, CPE". I definitely don't bother with dates. I don't think of
the tags as an informal database with all sorts of information in them.
Just the minimum info to identify a recording.

Similarly, WORK should be the minimum needed to distinguish a work.
You do need a WORKSORT tag to make sure Symphony No. 2 comes before
Symphony No. 10 (unless you want to name it No. 02).

And then there are TITLEs. I usually just accept what's in them unless
they were tagged by a complete moron. Unfortunately that is all too
often the case.

It can be a lot of work to retag everything, and then customscan takes
about 10 hours to scan 50K FLACS with SBS 7.5.3.

There's gotta be a better way. The whole tag system is a throwback to
primitive pre-relational data organization.
